About 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
At a fictional spelling bee, six quirky adolescents compete in the championship of a lifetime. Whilst we unearth hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the young people spell their way through a series of words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. One of the contestants will be crowned a champion, but who?
History of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based on an original improvisational play created by Rebecca Feldman and performed by a New York-based improvisational comedy group called The Farm. The musical made its debut at the start of 2005, with a run at the Second Stage Theatre. It won several awards, including the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.
Subsequent productions have taken place throughout the world, including in countries like Australia, Mexico, China and a UK production at the Donmar Warehouse in London. This production at the New World Stages has been staged in celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary.
