What Is the Play Awake and Sing! About?
It’s the 1930s, and the Bronx is reeling with the repercussions of the Great Depression. As poverty persists, three generations of the Berger family clash, each with different ideas of what it means to be Jewish, and how to reconcile the American Dream with the reality of their cramped tenement. When a new arrival puts extra pressure on the household, the family’s interpersonal dramas reach a boiling point. Will hope win out, or will disillusionment reign supreme?
The History of Awake and Sing!
The play premiered on Broadway in 1935, and has since been staged many times both internationally and in the US, including a Tony-winning revival in 2006 that starred Harry Potter’s Zoë Wanamaker and Marvel superstar Mark Ruffalo. This major new revival marks the show's fifth outing on Broadway, and is the first production of the play in almost ten years.
