The History of Becky Shaw

Becky Shaw premiered at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2008, before opening off-Broadway at Second Stage in 2008/2009, to critical acclaim. The show has since received international productions in Australia, and subsequent US productions in Philadelphia and San Francisco. This brand new production is part of Second Stage’s 2025/2026 season and marks the production's Broadway debut.

The show was also a smash during the 2009 awards season, with playwright Gina Gionfriddo winning the 2009 Outer Critics Circle Award, and the play receiving nominations for the Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards, as well as becoming a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Who are the creative team of Becky Shaw?

Becky Shaw is written by Gina Gionfriddo. Gionfriddo is a Pulitzer finalist, a former Guggenheim fellow and winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the Helen Merrill Award for Emerging Playwrights and an Outer Critics Circle Award. Her credits include plays Rapture, Blister, Burn, After Ashley, U.S Drag and screenwriting for The Alienist, House of Cards, and Law & Order.

Trip Cullman directs. Cullman is an Obie Award winner and an Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominee. His credits include The Rose Tattoo at the Todd Haimes Theatre, Choir Boy at the Samuel J Friedman Theatre, and Lobby Hero at the Hayes Theater.
