What is the play Call Me Izzy about?

Though she may be stuck in her trailer park and an unhappy marriage, Isabelle has a secret. She is a writer. Words are her greatest gift - and they may just be her ticket out of Rural Louisiana. Tenacious, strong-willed and fiercely imaginative, Izzy refuses to be silenced, no matter the cost. Darkly comic and deeply moving, Call Me Izzy is a hilarious and compelling one-woman play about hope, humour, and the power of telling your own story.

Previously developed under the working title A Circle in the Water, the show has received prior readings for invited audiences. Jean Smart, who was involved in various stages of the play’s development, stars in a breathtaking, tour-de-force solo performance. You won’t want to miss what promises to be the theatrical event of the season.

Jean Smart returns to Broadway: The Cast of Call Me Izzy

A six-time Emmy Award winner, you may know Jean Smart from her recent role as acerbic comedian Deborah Vance on HBO’s Hacks but Smart is an acting legend with a long-running career spanning film, TV and theater. Her credits include award winning roles on Frasier, long running CBS sitcom Designing Women, Fargo, Watchmen, and Mare of Easttown.

A multi-award winning actor, Smart’s accolades include three Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an Independent Spirit Award and nominations for a Drama Desk Award, a Tony Award and a Grammy Award.

In 2021, Smart made history with her Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. This nomination made Smart one of only two actors (the other being the late, great Betty White) to win an Emmy in the lead, supporting, and guest comedy categories. Her 2021 Emmy win also earned Smart admittance to an exclusive club: actors who have swept all five major TV awards with one single season of television, winning an Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG Award, Critics' Choice Award, and a Television Critics Association Award.

Call Me Izzy marks Smart’s return to the bright lights of Broadway for the first time in over two decades. The chance to catch Smart on stage doesn’t crop up often, as she last trod the boards in a Tony-nominated turn opposite Nathan Lane in a 2000 revival of The Man Who Came to Dinner. Before this, Smart’s only other Broadway role was in a 1981 production of Piaf, in which she played Marlene Dietrich - a role she later reprised in a television version of the drama.

Smart’s Off-Broadway credits include a Drama Desk nominated performance in Last Summer at Bluefish Cove in 1980, The End of the Day in 1992 and Fit to Be Tied in 1996. Don’t miss this rare chance to see an icon live on stage - book your tickets today!

Who are the creative team for Call Me Izzy?

Call Me Izzy is written by comedian, actor, journalist and playwright Jamie Wax. A Louisiana native, Wax began performing stand up aged only 14 and has toured extensively, developing multiple solo shows.

In 1999, Wax collaborated with composer Paul Taranto to create the musical Evangeline - based on the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - writing the book for the show. Evangeline aired nationally on PBS. Wax and Taranto later collaborated on the award-winning musical Passages, which also received a television special. Wax is also an Emmy-winning journalist, serving as a contributing correspondent for CBS News for over ten years.

Sarna Lapine, who was also involved in the show's developmental readings, directs. Lapine’s previous credits include the 2017 Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, You Are Here and Little Women.
