What Is the Opera Cosi Fan Tutte About?
Disguises, deception, and unexpected emotions abound in Cosi Fan Tutte, Mozart’s witty exploration of love and all its complexities, relocated to a 1950s Coney Island amusement park setting in this innovative staging. Under the influence of the nefarious Don Alfonso, Ferrando and Guglielmo, two young men, set out to test the loyalty of their sweethearts, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. The two pairs are soon on a tumultuous rollercoaster of emotion - will love win the day, or will the lovers leave the fair empty-handed?
The History of Cosi Fan Tutte
Cosi Fan Tutte premiered in Vienna in 1790. Upon its premiere, the opera was met with mixed reactions, and remained outside of the operatic staple repertoire for many years. The opera has since gained popularity, and is now frequently performed and considered a mainstay of the opera canon. Phelim McDermott’s innovative staging was first produced for the English National Opera in London in 2014, and has been revived multiple times since, including at the Met in 2018.
Met Opera Cosi Fan Tutte Creative Team
Cosi Fan Tutte has a score by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–91) and a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749–1838). The pair collaborated together on many of Mozart’s masterwork operas, including Le Nozze di Figaro, and Don Giovanni.
Cosi Fan Tutte is directed by Phelim McDermott (Akhnaten, Satyagraha). Nimrod David Pfeffer (Le Nozze di Figaro) conducts.
