What is Danny and the Deep Blue Sea about?

Roberta is a divorcee living with her teenage son. Danny is a brooding, solitary man who lives with his mother. They are both haunted by their pasts and when they run into each other at a bar in the Bronx, they sit down and compare battle scars. Over drinks, they excavate deeply concealed feelings, fears and truths, and tentatively share their hopes and desires.

Aubrey Plaza in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee Aubrey Plaza stars as Roberta in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, in her anticipated stage debut. Theatergoers will recognize Plaza from Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The White Lotus.

The cast of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea also includes Christopher Abbott as Danny. Abbott is best known for his work in indie films including Martha Marcy May Marlene, and a Golden Globe-nominated performance as John Yossarian in Catch-22 on Hulu. He previously appeared on Broadway in The House of Blue Leaves.

Plaza and Abbott last appeared together in the 2020 black comedy Black Bear; if you enjoyed them bouncing off each other in the movie, this is a great chance to see their rapport in person.

Shanley is an Academy Award-winning writer, and his play Doubt: A Parable won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awards. He has written over 20 plays that have been staged on and off Broadway.
