What is the play Death of a Salesman about?

Arthur Miller’s searing tragedy Death of a Salesman tells the story of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman in his sixties who’s spent his life chasing the American Dream. As he returns home from another failed business trip, Willy’s grip on reality begins to fray. Flitting between past and present, he reflects on choices made, hopes lost, and the mounting tension between him and his two sons, whose failures mirror Willy’s own disappointments.

While his devoted wife Linda tries to support him, Willy becomes increasingly haunted by regrets and self-delusion. Memories of missed opportunities and the belief that popularity is the key to success weigh heavily on him. As the family grapples with personal failures and strained expectations, the cracks in the Loman household deepen into a devastating collapse.

This landmark play is a powerful exploration of ambition, masculinity, and generational pressure. Through poetic realism and stark emotion, Death of a Salesman asks what happens when the pursuit of success becomes a trap, and whether the cost of dreams is ever truly worth it. Universally regarded as one of the greatest American plays of the 20th century, it remains deeply affecting and painfully relevant today.

The History of Death of a Salesman

Miller was inspired to write the play following a chance encounter with his Uncle, a salesman who later died by suicide, at a production of All My Sons. Death of a Salesman premiered on Broadway in 1949 to critical acclaim, starring Lee J Cobb in the titular role of Willy Loman. The production ran for over two years, winning the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. The play has since been revived on Broadway several times, and has won a further three Tony Awards for Best Revival, with actors including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Wendell Pierce and Dustin Hoffman playing the lead role. Many international productions have also been mounted, and the play has been adapted for film numerous times, including the 1951 Academy Award-nominated adaptation.
