What is the play Duke and Roya about?
When internationally acclaimed American Hip-Hop artist Duke travels to war-torn Kabul, Afghanistan to perform at an army airbase, he finds love in that most unlikely of places, with fearless Afghan interpreter Roya. As their chemistry sizzles and the two fall for each other, they must learn to navigate their differences - the starry world of luxury and fame that Duke is accustomed to, vs. the danger, conflict and need for survival that defines Roya’s life. With love comes compromise; will the two be able to challenge their beliefs and fight for their relationship in a world that threatens to tear them apart? Or will the cultural divides prove too much for their budding romance?
Duke and Roya first premiered in 2013 under the title Love in Afghanistan at the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle at Arena Stage, Washington, D.C, to critical acclaim. This bold new play is at turns romantic, funny and deeply moving. You won't want to miss it - secure your tickets for Duke and Roya today.
