Michael Shannon and Audra McDonald celebrate playwright Terrence McNally’s 80th birthday in a new revival of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. The classic two-hander opens at the Broadhurst Theatre for a limited engagement from May 2019.
Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune follows a lonely waitress and a short-order cook whose first date turns into a one-night stand. But between a yearning for company and hidden feelings, could it become something more?
Following huge success Off-Broadway between 1987 and 1989, McNally’s play has seen a previous Broadway revival in 2002 and a film adaptation starring Michelle Pfieffer and Al Pacino. With a new production in New York headed by an all-star cast, this tale of two lonely New Yorkers continues to captivate audiences.
Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon co-star as Frankie and Johnny. McDonald has a record-breaking six Tony Awards for work including Carousel, Ragtime and Porgy and Bess. Shannon most recently appeared in the Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water, with previous theater credits including A Long Day’s Journey into Night, for which he earned a Tony Award nomination.
Terrence McNally is considered one of America’s greatest modern playwrights, with four Tony Awards to his name. His most recent work includes the book for hit musical Anastasia, which played at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York.
Director Arin Arbus makes her Broadway debut, with previous credits including a decade-long engagement as Associate Artistic Director of Theater for a New Audience. The creative team also includes designer Riccardo Hernandez and lighting designer Natasha Katz.
Digging deep into universal fears of loneliness and connection, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is as heart-warming and heart-wrenching as the music it’s named after. Playing a strictly limited season at the Broadhurst Theatre, the production runs from May 4 2019.
