What Is the Full Monty Musical About?
In Buffalo, New York, six steelworkers struggle to make ends meet after losing their jobs. Low on cash and employment prospects, the men decide to put everything on the line by taking it all off - forming a Chippendale strip group and presenting an act at a local club. As the date of the performance steadily approaches, the men must grapple with their inner demons and learn to shed their anxieties and self-consciousness, as well as their clothes.
The History of The Full Monty
The Full Monty is based on the 1997 British movie of the same name, which starred Trainspotting’s Robert Carlisle and Game of Thrones’ Mark Addy. The musical transplants the action from a small town in the UK to Buffalo, New York, but is overall loyal to the plot of the movie. The Full Monty the Musical premiered in San Diego in 2000, before transferring to Broadway the same year and running for over two years. The show later transferred to the West End, winning a London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical, and has since toured internationally. This revival marks the show's return to Broadway, over 20 years since its premiere.
