What is Heathers the Musical about?

Step into the corridors of Westerburg, where being popular can be a matter of life and death. We meet Veronica Sawyer, a social reject who is just trying to get by, until she starts hanging around with Heathers, the "it-girls" who are beautiful on the outside but rotten to the core. As her dreams of becoming popular start to become a reality, JD, a rebellious newcomer at the school, begins manipulating Veronica into a murderous spree. Maybe, being a social reject isn’t so bad after all..

The History of Heathers the Musical

Recognised for being wickedly funny and whip-smart, Heathers the Musical is adapted from the 1988 film that famously starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. The stage adaptation moved Off-Broadway in 2014 after a try-out in Los Angeles, making its premiere at the New World Stages. It went on to have a subsequent run in Australia.

However, the multiple productions in the UK, including its premiere at The Other Palace in 2018, made Heathers the Musical incredibly popular! The last run in the West End was at @sohoplace in 2024 before it embarked on a UK tour. Now, Heathers the Musical returns to where it all began at the New World Stages.

Heathers the Musical Creative Team

The musical was adapted for the stage with a book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy, who notably worked on Desperate Housewives and Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde the Musical).

Heathers the Musical is directed by Andy Fickman. An American filmmaker who has extensive credits, including She’s The Man and The Game Plan. He recently directed a new musical adaptation of 13 Going On 30, which debuted in the UK last year and heads to Toronto in 2026.
