A group of hikers sit down by the fire to exchange tales about their lives, form relationships, and reflect on the liminal, hopeful and passionate space between childhood and adulthood.Inspired by Sufjan Stevens’ cult favorite album Illinois, this is an unconventional and compelling new musical. Stevens’ ode to the US state is a cinematic and lush voyage through its people, landscape and history that conjures exciting images of UFOs, zombies and more. On stage, this boundless creativity transforms into a stunning mix of choreography and music.

Illinoise is adapted for the stage with music & lyrics by Sufjan Stevens, a story by Justin Peck and Pulitzer Prize winner Jackie Sibbles Drury (Fairview), and emotive direction and choreography by Justin Peck.Peck is a Tony Award-winning choreographer who lit up Broadway with his work on Carousel in 2018, and has worked on film with Spielberg’s West Side Story and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. He has been lauded for his work on Illinoise during its pre-Broadway runs, with critics calling it “unique and brilliantly realized” (WTTW Chicago).

Very expressive storytelling by the actors and beautiful music by the band. Note that there is no dialogue and the story is told through dance only. Definitely an unconventional show but a wonderful treat to experience.
