Kenrex in New York City

One man true-crime drama Kenrex makes its New York City debut, following critically acclaimed runs in London. This blistering play is based on a remarkable true story, and tells the story of a small town’s fight to bring a monstrous member of their tight-knit community to justice. This exhilarating drama is from an award-winning writer and performer is “as good as theatre gets” (All that Dazzles). Kenrex comes off-Broadway to the Lucille Lortel theatre, in the heart of the West Village, for a strictly limited run - secure your tickets today.

What is the solo play Kenrex about?

Skidmore, Missouri, 1981. In a small community, Ken Rex McElroy reigns supreme. Despite being a monstrous bully, with a laundry list of crimes that span over a decade, thanks to a slimy and corrupt defence attorney, McElroy has never been prosecuted.

McElroy’s list of sins includes theft, assault, abduction and even attempted murder - but when he shoots the town’s beloved greengrocer, Bo Bowenkamp, leaving him for dead, the people of Skidmore reach their breaking point. Rallying together, the community decides that if the law won’t make McElroy pay… they will.

The History of Kenrex

Based on an unbelievable true story, Kenrex first premiered in Sheffield, England, in 2024 before transferring to London for two acclaimed runs - first at Southwark Playhouse Borough in 2025, and then to The Other Palace in 2026.

This dazzling one-man show is part true-crime drama, part western, and digs deep into the corrupt heart of the American justice system. Featuring recordings, atmospheric lighting and alongside a live on-stage musician who accompanies the action with a foot-stomping Americana soundtrack, Kenrex “demands to be seen” (Guardian).

Incredible show. Is thought-provoking and impressive. I didn't know the story already, so I was enthralled. The music really enhanced the storytelling. One warning - it gets very loud sometimes. If you're sensitive to that, bring the kind of earplugs Read more
