What Is the Opera Lincoln in the Bardo About?
Set in 1862, shortly after the death of Abraham Lincoln’s son, Willie, the story runs the course of an evening at a cemetery. Whilst Lincoln visits a stone vault to grieve his loss, his son’s spirit is prevented from moving on, leaving it stuck in the transitional state between life and death known as the “bardo”. Ultimately, Lincoln in the Bardo is a story about grief, love, and letting go.

Lincoln in the Bardo is based on a novel released in 2017 byGeorge Saunders. The book received critical acclaim and won the Booker Prize. A film adaptation is in the works starring Meryl Streep, Bill Hader and Jonathan Bailey. The operatic adaptation is debuting at the Metropolitan Opera House as part of its 2026/27 season.
