What is the play Marjorie Prime about?
When 86-year-old Marjorie begins to show signs of early-stage dementia, her daughter Tess and son-in-law Jon struggle to communicate with her. But Marjorie soon finds comfort in Walter - an artificial intelligence recreation of her late husband. A moving meditation on memory and mortality, Marjorie Prime asks how technology might help us to navigate grief, and what we would say to those we have lost if we had another chance to speak with them.
Marjorie Prime premiered in September 2014 at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles, before transferring off-Broadway in 2015. The play was a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist and won the 2016 Horton Foote Prize for Outstanding New American Play, also earning major nominations from the Drama League and Lucille Lortel Awards. In 2017, Marjorie Prime was adapted into a film of the same name, starring Jon Hamm, and in 2023, the play received its London premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory. This brand new production of this prescient and powerful drama marks the play’s Broadway debut. Marjorie Prime is “brilliant, startling and profound”(New York Magazine) and comes to Broadway for a strictly limited run - make sure to book early!
