Schmigadoon Review at Nederlander Theatre New York

10 June 2026

Schmigadoon! is a new musical comedy based on Series 1 of the Apple TV series of the same name. A couple from the modern world find themselves transported into this town of Schmigadoon, and the story plays out their relationship in this setting as they try to travel back to their world. The musical is filled with song and dance numbers in the style of the classic musicals of the 1940s and 1950s.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Classic, old-fashioned musical theatre with big production numbers that leave you smiling.

The new stage show had a short run in Washington, D.C. in early 2025 before opening on Broadway in April 2026. It won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations. The show is certainly deserving, but I hadn’t expected it to win, as it didn’t feel new to me, having seen the TV show nearly 5 years ago. It seemed true to the TV Series, which will please fans of the show, and the writing and music were certainly impeccable.

The production is infectiously enjoyable with a quality cast at its heart. Schmigadoon! has humour, lavish sets, elaborate costumes, and full-chorus dance numbers. Think classic, old-fashioned musical theatre with big production numbers that leave you smiling. The couple who go back in time, Josh and Melissa, played by Alex Brightman and Sara Chase respectively, are not typical leads, as many members of the town community have strong roles and all play their part. Sara’s performance was acknowledged by her 2026 Tony nomination for the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Other notable standouts for me were Max Clayton as Danny, who reminded me of London’s Charlie Stemp, plus McKenzie Kurtz as Betsy, who played a fantastic characterisation. Special mention should go to Ayaan Diop as Carson, who was steady, cute and witty throughout.

You will have a fun evening if you go to the show. It does not matter if you have not seen the TV Series, as the show stands alone and is complete in itself. It will attract an audience because of its Tony win for Best Musical, but I think it would appeal more to classic musical lovers and Broadway fans who will understand the stagey Easter Eggs dotted throughout the show. It is currently booking until January 2027, but it will be interesting to see if it extends past the holiday season, once the novelty of the Best Musical win rides out.

Schmigadoon! plays at Nederlander Theatre until 03 January 2027.

Where I Sat

I sat in B113 of the Mezzanine. This was the second row with a clear view of the whole stage due to the rake of this level. There was plenty of space, including legroom. The seat itself was comfortable, although the armrests were not padded, so they instead served as a divider. It was a great central view to enjoy an overview of the action.
