Devilishly Good: Get Tickets for The Picture of Dorian Gray
What price would you pay to stay eternally young? This groundbreaking play, a solo adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray starring Succession’s Sarah Snook, transfers to Broadway’s Music Box Theatre following an award-winning run in London’s West End. The Picture of Dorian Gray bewitched audiences during sell out runs in Sydney and London with an innovative combination of video and live performance that The Washington Post deemed “so revolutionary, remarkable and dazzling you’ll think you’re gazing into theater’s future”. It’s so good you’ll think about selling your soul to snag a ticket. What is the play The Picture of Dorian Gray about?
“I am tired of myself tonight. I should like to be somebody else.”In Oscar Wilde’s classic gothic novel the vain, beautiful Dorian Gray, upon seeing an exquisitely painted portrait of himself, wishes he could stay just as young and gorgeous forever. Dorian is granted his wish - for a price. Having sold his soul, Dorian stays eternally young, while the portrait in his attic ages and grows ever more grotesque - reflecting Dorian’s sins as he slides headlong into hedonism.
Kip William’s groundbreaking one-woman adaptation stars Succession’s Sarah Snook as Dorian, acting opposite her own recorded image in "a juggling act of high order" (The Guardian). The Picture of Dorian Gray on Broadway holds a mirror - or rather, a camera - up to the selfie-obsessed narcissism of the modern age, mingling live performance with both pre-recorded and live video, filmed on stage by an expertly choreographed video crew, combining "Victorian melodrama with modern technological nightmare" (The Telegraph).
Who are the cast and creatives of The Picture of Dorian Gray?
Emmy Award-winner Sarah Snook, star of HBO’S Succession, reprises her role from the show’s critically acclaimed run in London’s West End, which earned her an Olivier Award. Or rather roles, plural - as Snook tackles all twenty six characters in this vibrant new production, in a performance described by The Guardian as “tinglingly virtuoso and startlingly dangerous”.The Picture of Dorian Gray is directed by and adapted from Oscar Wilde’s iconic novel by award winning director Kip Williams (Miss Julie, Suddenly Last Summer), and was originally produced during William’s tenure as Artistic Director at the Sydney Theatre Company.
The production's creative team includes video design by David Bergman, set and costume design by Marg Horwell, lighting design by Nick Schlieper, composition and sound design by Clemence Williams, and dramaturgy by Eryn Jean Norvill.
