This gripping family drama uses mathematical intrigue to probe the complex legacy of intellect, inheritance, and mental illness.
The History of Proof on Broadway
David Auburn’s Proof first premiered Off-Broadway in 2000 before transferring to Broadway the same year. It quickly became a sensation, winning the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.
The play was adapted into a 2005 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal, cementing its legacy beyond the stage. Blending emotional storytelling and intellectual intrigue, Proof has since become a staple of contemporary theatre syllabi and regional productions.
This 2025 revival marks its first return to Broadway in over two decades, reimagined for a new generation grappling with legacy, imposter syndrome, and mental health.
