The Color Purple on Broadway Tickets

Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre

Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Color Purple is transformed into a stirring and epic musical on Broadway. Charting the life of African American woman Celie’s journey over 40 years, this story of identity and self-discovery in the American South plays at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Inspired by Alice Walker’s award-winning novel and Steven Spielberg’s movie, The Color Purple enjoys a revival on Broadway in 2015 following a successful run in London. Starring rising star Cynthia Erivo, the show plays at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Set in the American South, The Color Purple charts one woman’s journey to reach love and self-acceptance. After bearing children and enduring marriage at a young age, Celie is separated from the sister with whom she shared an incomparable bond. Over the next 40 years, she must overcome torment, loss and pain to realize her own unique voice and rediscover her family.

With a musical mix of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, The Color Purple was first staged on Broadway in 2005 after a world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre. This revival opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, and marks lead actress Cynthia Erivo’s breakout Broadway role.

Other cast members include singer and actress Jennifer Hudson (Hair) as Shrug Avery, Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) as Sofia, Isaiah Johnson as Mister and Joaquina Kalukango as Celie’s sister Nettie.

The Color Purple at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle (Sweeney Todd), who also provides set design. It was originally adapted for stage by Marsha Norman (The Red Shoes, The Bridges of Madison County) with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.

Based on a beloved book and film, The Color Purple on Broadway is a triumphant, painful and joyous production anchored by the "incandescent" (The New York Times) Cynthia Erivo.
