What impulses and feelings define who we are? Can they be manufactured in a pill? Emmy Award winner Lucy Prebble’s (Succession) funny and intimate play The Effect dives straight into some heavy existential questions as its characters take part in a drugs trial and quickly fall in love. This “intense and intoxicating” (The Guardian) production from Jamie Lloyd (A Doll’s House and Betrayal on Broadway) was a hit at London’s National Theatre last Fall and now runs for a limited four-week season at The Shed theater.
What is The Effect about?
Connie and Tristan have signed up for a drug trial, and soon they’re falling in love. But is it real? Or is it a dizzying side effect of the antidepressant they’re taking? And are they taking the antidepressant or the placebo? On the other side of the experiment, the doctors are asking questions too. Should they intervene and remove Connie and Tristan from the trial? Or continue and use them as guinea pigs?
Posing intense questions about love and manufactured emotions, The Effect is an intimate, challenging drama from playwright and screenwriter Lucy Prebble, who won an Emmy Award for her work on HBO’s Succession. This acclaimed revival is directed by Olivier Award winner Jamie Lloyd, who made his mark on Broadway with Betrayal starring Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox, and soon brings his 5-star revival of Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, to New York.
