The Other Place in New York

The Other Place, the striking new play by acclaimed British director and playwright Alexander Zeldin, makes its Off-Broadway U.S. premiere at The Shed’s Griffin Theater, just a short walk from Hudson Yard. This intimate and emotionally charged drama is a bold, contemporary take on Antigone, layered with themes of loss, justice and reckoning. This limited-run of “the outstanding play of the year” (Broadway World), stars House of the Dragon’s Emma D’Arcy and The Crown’s Tobias Menzies reprising their roles from the production's smash hit London run.

What is the play The Other Place about?

The Other Place follows a fractured family brought back together on the anniversary of their father’s death. Two estranged sisters reunite at the family home, but simmering tensions soon boil over. Their uncle, hopeful for a new beginning, is caught between the past and the future as the sisters' conflicting desires come to light. One demands justice; the other longs for peace.

Inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, Zeldin’s play is not a direct retelling but an emotional response to its timeless themes of grief, moral duty, power, and resistance. Set in a recognisably modern world yet rich with poetic echoes, the play unspools like a memory, fragmented, intimate, and filled with emotional suspense.

The Other Place premiered at London’s National Theatre in 2024, to critical acclaim, and was later recorded and available to stream on the National Theatre At Home platform. This production marks the shows US debut.
