What is This World of Tomorrow Off-Broadway about?
It’s the end of the 21st century, and though his projects may be forward thinking, scientist Bert Allenberry constantly finds himself looking back. Longing for the past and disenchanted by his work, Bert embarks on a journey back through time, hoping to find true love. But Bert finds himself returning over and over again to the same time and place - Flushing Meadows, Queens and the 1939 New York World’s Fair, a “world of tomorrow” themed exhibition where the possibilities of the future feel truly limitless. When possibility feels endless, what path will Bert choose?
This brand new play is based on Tom Hanks' New York Times Bestselling short story collection Uncommon Type. The production premieres, fittingly, at innovative and adaptive off-Broadway arts space The Shed - with Alex Poots, the Shed’s Artistic Director, stating of Hanks that “he’s one of the most beloved and trusted storytellers of our time” (New York Times).
