About Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
Cheerful Brit Dougal travels to the US for his estranged father's wedding - and while it may be Dougal’s dad’s second wedding, for Dougal this vacation it will be a series of firsts - his first time travelling to New York City, and his first time meeting his father. Robin, the cynical sister of the bride, is sent to meet him at the airport - and this no-nonsense New Yorker doesn't have time for Dougal’s almost impossible optimism. With both Christmas and the wedding fast approaching, Robin has an endless list of errands to tackle, so when Dougal insists on helping Robin with the next task on her list - transporting the wedding cake all the way from Brooklyn - she reluctantly agrees. But Dougal has an idealised image of New York from the movies in his head, and their straightforward task soon takes several unexpected detours…
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) was first workshopped in Ipswich and Northampton, UK, under the title The Season, winning a Stage Debut Award for Best Composer, Lyricist or Book Writer, and the Stiles & Drewe Mentorship prize.
The production transferred to London’s Kiln theatre, and then later into the Criterion Theatre in the West End, before receiving its North American debut at the American Repertory Theatre, MA, in early 2025. This “charming romcom is a treat” (Guardian) - secure your tickets today.
