The Vagina Monologues in New York
Landmark feminist work and international sensation The Vagina Monologues returns to New York City where it all began, coming off-Broadway to the Laura Pels Theatre, in the heart of Manhattan. Based on over 200 interviews with real women, these blistering fictionalised monologues bring to light issues across the spectrum of womanhood. Directed by Olivier Award winner Noma Dumezweni, this groundbreaking play returns in celebration of its 30th Anniversary for a strictly limited run.
What Is The Vagina Monologues About?
This ever-evolving work is based on 200 real-life interviews, which have been transformed into fictional monologues about women's experiences - from sex and pleasure, birth and trauma, joy and desire, pain and violence. The Vagina Monologues is a taboo-breaking, empowering piece of theatre that aims to end violence against women and gender expansive people. Each personal monologue is performed by a diverse group of women, uplifting their voices as they speak about the elements of womanhood that are usually unspoken.
The History of The Vagina Monologues
The Vagina Monologues was first written in 1996, with the playwright V initially conducting interviews with her friends. Originally performed in a basement in Greenwich Village, the play later premiered at HERE Arts Centre, NYC, off-off Broadway, before transferring off-Broadway to the Westside Theatre and winning an Obie Award for Best Play. Initially a celebration of female empowerment, the play soon incorporated indictments of violence against women, and launched V-Day, a global non-profit committed to stopping gender based violence.
The show soon became a huge success, and has been performed in venues all over the world, with famous cast members including Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon and Opera. In 2001, a V-Day event at Madison Square Garden sold out, raising over one million dollars for groups working to end violence against women and girls.
The play has since been revised and expanded numerous times. Each year, the monologues are performed at college campuses across the United States and internationally, adding new monologues which reflect contemporary issues facing women, with notable productions including an all transgender cast in 2004. In 2006 The New York Times called The Vagina Monologues "probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade." The Vagina Monologues have since been performed in over 140 countries and translated into over 50 languages. This staging celebrates the landmark show's 30th anniversary of V-Day
