1536 in London

Book tickets for 1536 at the Ambassadors Theatre, in the heart of Leicester Square, and experience a gripping new play that places female voices at the heart of Tudor history. Following a celebrated, sell-out premiere at the Almeida Theatre, Ava Pickett’s “wonderfully vibrant, cracking debut” (The Guardian) transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season - secure your tickets today.

What is the play 1536 about?

Set in a marshy field in Essex, far from the grandeur of royal courts, 1536 follows three women grappling with friendship, survival, and the rippling impact of Anne Boleyn’s downfall. This bold and darkly comic play offers a modern lens on a pivotal moment in history.

Though the play is set in 1536 - the year Anne Boleyn was executed - it doesn’t focus on the Tudor court. Instead, it centres on three ordinary women, exploring how seismic events at the top of society impact those at the bottom. The characters speak in a contemporary, colloquial style, bridging past and present through a darkly hilarious, anachronistic script.

The History of 1536

Ava Pickett won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2024 for 1536, an honour awarded to outstanding English-language plays written by women. The play was then developed through the Genesis Almeida New Playwrights, Big Plays Programme and premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 2025 to critical acclaim.
