Resilience, survival and life in Gaza are front-and-centre at the Royal Court Theatre this season, as Khawla Ibraheem’s unforgettable solo play A Knock on the Roof transfers from Off-Broadway. Set in Gaza, where a young woman is rehearsing her escape plan in case of bombings, this “devastating and essential” (Fest Mag) story is full of dry wit, sensitive character studies, and an unforgettable performance from Ibraheem that brings events halfway across the world right to our doorstep. What is A Knock on the Roof about?
In Gaza, Mariam lives under the constant threat of bombardment, but she’s been practising. She knows that the army often drops small bombs as a warning before they destroy a building, and this “knock on the roof” is the timer she listens out for every day. When she hears it, she’ll have minutes to escape. With wry humour and dogged determination, join Mariam as she rehearses the run of her life, and considers what - and who - she can take with her if the worst happens.Unflinching, tense and often funny, Knock on the Roof is a portrait of survival told through the eyes of one young woman. It comes to London’s home of new writing following acclaimed seasons at Traverse Theatre Edinburgh and New York Theatre Workshop Off-Broadway.
