What is the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream about?

Amid moonlit woods just beyond the city, love’s logic unravels, identities shift, and magic reigns. With a sprinkling of fairy dust, a wild web of stories is woven together: the impending wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, the romantic entanglements of four young Athenians, a band of amateur players rehearsing a rustic play, and the capricious antics of a fairy host led by Oberon and his sprite, Puck.

In this forest, desire is both unpredictable and irresistible. The edge between dream and waking life blurs, and laughter springs from both chaos and connection. So let yourself be spellbound, and who knows who you’ll be by morning…

The History of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of William Shakespeare’s most celebrated and enduring comedies, believed to have been written between 1595 and 1596. Scholars suggest it may have been composed for a noble wedding celebration, possibly that of Elizabeth Carey, a member of Queen Elizabeth I’s court. Its intricate structure, poetic language, and fantastical themes mark it as one of Shakespeare’s most imaginative works.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream was first published in quarto in 1600, with a more reliable version included in the 1623 First Folio. It became a popular choice for performances during Shakespeare’s lifetime and has remained a staple of theatrical repertoire ever since. The play’s popularity surged in the 19th century with spectacular Victorian productions that emphasised its fairy-tale elements.

Over the centuries, it has inspired numerous adaptations in opera, ballet, film, and contemporary theatre. From Benjamin Britten’s 1960 opera to the modern screen adaptations by directors like Michael Hoffman in 1999 and Julie Taymor in 2014, A Midsummer Night’s Dream continues to captivate audiences with its dreamlike blend of romance, comedy, and magic.

Not my favourite Shakespeare play - but one that will always be popular. Some changes - Bottom is not as expected, but is performed well and doesn't take it too far off the beaten track. Enjoyable take on the play - and easy to understand for those n Read more

The Globe are not necessarily sticking to the original versions! However, they are making things very clear, easy to follow and entertaining. Good fun for all - with or without previous knowledge of matter Shakespearian.

Performance date: 01 June 2023

Lovely musicians (lots of brass) in the balcony and a noticably diverse cast, but the essence of the play stays the same - which is important. Certainly worth a visit.
