The Afronauts in London
The Afronauts rockets into London for its world premiere. This unmissable new play about resistance, imagination, and reaching for the stars from Olivier-nominated playwright Ryan Calais Cameron reimagines a little-known chapter of African history. Don't miss this sharply witty, politically charged play, coming to the Royal Court Theatre, in vibrant Sloane Square, for a strictly limited run in winter 2026, commissioned especially as part of the theatre’s 70th anniversary season.
What is The Afronauts about?
1964: As the USA and USSR battle it out to reach the moon, another contender enters the space race - Zambia. In a country that has just gained its independence, one schoolteacher gathers a band of eccentric students and launches them into a dream that defies gravity.
With limited resources and limitless ambition, he gathers a group of ambitious misfits for the ultimate mission. What follows is part sci-fi fable, part political satire, part celebration of a nation reaching beyond the colonial legacy.
The Afronauts is inspired by the true(ish) story of Zambia’s 1964 space programme, reimagined by award winning playwright Ryan Calais Cameron. This world premiere is supported by the Genesis Foundation and is the first commission from their new Royal Court programme, designed to support bold, original work.
