What Is the Play An Oak Tree About?
A father, mourning his daughter who was killed in a car accident, comes face to face with the man responsible for the first time since the accident when he volunteers for the driver’s hypnotist act. What ensues is a remarkable theatrical experience that “illuminates the manipulation and the wonder of the way stories transform us” (The Guardian).
This absurd, poignant and funny piece metatextually explores loss, manipulation and the remarkable power of theatre. No two performances are the same, as the second actor only receives the script the moment they step on stage.
The History of An Oak Tree
An Oak Tree premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005, to critical acclaim, selling out its run and winning a Herald Angel Award. The show has since toured internationally and across the UK, with notable productions including a three-month off-Broadway run in New York, where the show won a special citation OBIE Award. The show celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2015 with a run at the National Theatre, and its 20th with a limited run at the Orange Tree Theatre. Although the second actor's role is “Father”, casting is not limited to only men, and many notable performers have taken part in the production, including Jessie Buckley, Sophie Okonedo, David Tennant, Frances McDormand, F.
