What is the play Dracula about?
Jonathan Harker, a newly qualified solicitor, is hired by mysterious nobleman Count Dracula to help with the purchase of a London property and travels to Transylvania to visit the count in his home. But when Jonathan arrives, all is not as it seems. The terrified locals warn Harker about the enigmatic Count, wolves disrupt his journey, and Jonathan is unsettled by the sinister and intimidating castle. Though the Count seems genial and welcoming, if not a little strange, Harker soon realises he is being kept prisoner - and the trio of beautiful but unsettling women who live in the castle with the Count have developed a fascination with him…
Disoriented, delirious and fearing for his life, Harker is determined escape and make it back to London, and to his fiancée Mina Murray. But will Jonathan make it home safely, or will the vampiric Count haunt him all the way back to England?
Dracula is based on the 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish novelist Bram Stoker. One of the most famous books in English literature, the novel is originally told in epistolary form - through letters, diary entries and newspaper articles. Highly influential, Dracula reshaped the way vampires are seen in popular culture. Dracula has been adapted into many different forms, including for stage, TV, into operas, musicals and has received several iconic film adaptations, which include a 1931 adaptation starring Bela Lugosi as Dracula, a 1958 film starring Christopher Lee and the 1992 film starring Gary Oldman as Dracula and Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker.
In this brand new adaptation, which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2024, all 23 characters will be brought to life by just one actor in a radical reimagining of the seminal vampire story. The production is the third in director Kip Williams’ “game-changing gothic cine-theatre trilogy” (Time Out), which includes The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the award-winning adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray. We can't wait to get our teeth stuck into Erivo’s portrayal!
