Daring and Surprising: Echo Tickets On Sale Now

One actor, one script, no preparation: Echo is theatre at its most daring. Every night, a new performer steps onto the Royal Court stage with no idea what will unfold. Armed only with an envelope and a willingness to leap into the unknown, they become the centre of a powerful story by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour.

Part of the Royal Court’s summer season, this extraordinary theatrical experience returns for a strictly limited time, following an acclaimed run last year. Expect laughter, reflection, and moments that will take your breath away - then disappear forever.

What is the play Echo about?

Echo (Every Cold Heated Oxygen) is a unique theatrical experiment co-produced for the LIFT Festival, which celebrates bold international performance. This story-within-a-story uses technology, memory and real-time discovery to explore what it means to carry your past across borders, across time, and across generations.

Soleimanpour, known for his rule-breaking style, offers up a script that questions how we inherit our identities and how the past echoes through us. From the moment the envelope is opened on stage, the audience and performer are in it together - connected by surprise, truth, and imagination.

The Echo Cast and Creatives

Echo is the latest work from Nassim Soleimanpour, whose previous hit White Rabbit, Red Rabbit captivated global audiences with its unrehearsed format. The production is directed by Omar Elerian, whose inventive approach to storytelling (Misty, two Palestinians go dogging) makes him the perfect match for this playful, profound piece.

The show will feature a thrilling line-up of guest performers, with a new actor each night. Among those taking the leap are beloved comedian and presenter Mel Giedroyc, sharp-witted stand-up and writer Nish Kumar, and acclaimed actor Juliet Stevenson. More names will be revealed throughout the run, but who you see is all part of the surprise.

Reviews for Nassim Soleimanpour’s Echo

Since its premiere, Echo has received widespread critical acclaim for its daring concept and emotional resonance. This is “a smart, sophisticated and moving feat of theatre” (The Guardian) that is “shocking, hopeful and endlessly inventive” (The Stage).

Whether funny, unsettling or unexpectedly tender, each performance becomes its own singular event - “a haunting meditation on identity and inheritance” (Time Out) that is shared once and never repeated in the same way.

Lots more use of live filming, screens and video. Royal Court just laps that up. Great, vulnerable yet assured participation from Jessica Gunning.

Saw Jodie Whittaker in this and it was incredible. Such interesting storytelling and the way Jodie delivered it, learning the story at the same time as us, was amazing.
