About English National Ballet: Our Voices

The evening begins with George Balanchine’s Themes and Variations. Thirteen couples dance to Tchaikovsky’s music in a ballet that is both grand and delicate. The piece’s skillful, intricate choreography will leave you exhilarated as it reaches its triumphant final moments.

In a new work set to Stravinsky’s score Les Noces, Andrea Miller's visceral, imaginative style is on display next. Dancers perform on stage in front of gorgeous artwork by Phyllida Barlow, alongside the Opera Holland Park Chorus. 100 years on from its premiere, Miller’s new approach to this work examines the power held in rituals and imagines what happened after Stravinsky’s most famous piece, The Rite of Spring, ended in sacrifice.

Finally, British choreographer David Dawson closes out the evening with a deeply moving journey in Four Last Songs. Richard Strauss’ song cycle is a towering masterpiece and poignant farewell. In Dawson’s piece, twelve dancers gather and perform his poetic movements as the rich, lyrical melodies ring out across the auditorium.

English National Ballet: Our Voices Creative Team

The English National Ballet Philharmonic Orchestra performs the music for this exceptional evening of dance and entertainment, with contributions from some of the best classical practitioners of the 21st century. Opera Holland Park Chorus is in central London, direct from their beautiful open-air theatre in Holland Park. Singers for Les Noces and Four Last Songs are to be confirmed.

George Balanchine was one of the 20th century’s most influential choreographers and is often credited as the father of American ballet. He co-founded the New York City Ballet and was noted for his minimalistic approach to ballet using classical and neo-classical music.

Andrea Miller is an internationally-renowned choreographer and founder of the Brooklyn-based dance company GALLIM. Her work has been presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, the Royal Opera House, and the Lincoln Center among others.

David Dawson is a leading figure in classical ballet, bringing old work to life for new audiences. He is the recipient of the Prix Benois de la Danse Award and Russia’s Golden Mask Award - becoming the first British choreographer to create a ballet for the country’s iconic Mariinsky Ballet.
