Manon in London

A woman torn between true love and a desire for wealth and luxury is at the heart of this intensely spirited ballet by Kenneth MacMillan. Set to a spine-tingling score by Jules Massenet – secure your tickets today!

What Is Manon About?

Set in the ancien régime of 18th-century France, Manon follows the young and idealistic titular character caught between the options of marrying the wealthy, older Monsieur GM or running away with poor student Des Grieux. Choosing the latter, the two head to the streets of Paris to escape her controlling brother and Monsieur GM. Their adventure takes them to a new world across the sea, where the fateful story builds to an ultimately tragic end.

The History of Manon

The ballet is drawn from L’Historie du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, a novel released by Abbé Prévost in 1731. When it was published, it was considered controversial for its time. The story inspired several operas, including one by Puccini, but it was Kenneth MacMillan who was able to create a full-length ballet using the narrative from its source. Manon premiered in London in 1974, with the last production being staged at the London Coliseum over five years ago.

Manon Creative Team

Manon features music by Jules Massenet and choreography by Kenneth MacMillan. The production is orchestrated by Martin Yates, with design by Nicholas Georgiadis and lighting design by Jacopo Pantani.

The Royal Ballet’s Music Director Koen Kessels will conduct.
