Grace Pervades in London

Ralph Fiennes stars in the London transfer of Grace Pervades, a new play from Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright David Hare, about the lives of acclaimed Victorian actors Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. Fresh from a critically acclaimed transfer at the Theatre Royal Bath, this “exceptional” (Guardian) work comes to the Theatre Royal Haymarket, just a stone's throw from Piccadilly Circus. Set an alert to book today!

What is the play Grace Pervades about?

Grace Pervades follows the lives of groundbreaking Victorian actors Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, interweaving their personal and professional lives in an “elegant love letter to theatre” (Guardian). Irving is an established performer and manager whose wife and children come second to his career and his aim to make theatre respectable; Terry is an acclaimed actress and, scandalously, an unwed mother, who longs to step into the leading roles. As their relationship deepens from mentee and mentor to something more, Irving and Terry must navigate the changing face of the art form they have fought to shape, and contend with what their theatrical legacy might be.

Based on the remarkable true stories of Henry Irving, who was the first actor to be knighted, and Ellen Terry, whose decades-long career was highly influential, Grace Pervades sheds a new light on these theatrical icons. Titled after a scathing review of a performance of Terry’s, in which a reviewer stated “Grace pervades the hussy”, and made disparaging remarks about her children, who were born out of wedlock, Grace Pervades premiered at the Theatre Royal Bath in summer 2025 to critical acclaim. The production comes to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited run - make sure to book early for this “fascinating, absorbing and very funny” (Financial Times) play.
