What Is the Musical I'm Every Woman About?

I'm Every Woman delves into the extraordinary life of Chaka Khan, tracing her journey from her early days in Chicago to international stardom. The musical explores her time with the funk band Rufus, her solo career, and her collaborations with music legends like Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Joni Mitchell. The show also delves into her activism, personal struggles, and triumphs, offering an intimate look at the woman behind the music.

Audiences will be treated to a soundtrack of Chaka's greatest hits, including "I Feel For You," "Ain't Nobody," "Sweet Thing," and, of course, "I'm Every Woman”. Blending powerful storytelling and iconic music, I'm Every Woman is a celebration of resilience, passion, and the enduring impact of a true musical icon.

Chaka Khan Musical Creative Team

Music and lyrics are by Chaka Khan.

The book is by Nia T. Hill. Hill is an award-winning writer, producer, and director whose credits span theatre, television, and film. She produced and toured Tyler Perry’s first musical I Know I’ve Been Changed, and co-founded Strange Fruit Media, winning an NAACP Image Award for Sunday Best and a Grammy Award for the song "Jesus" performed by Le’Andria Johnson. She has served as creative director for Chaka Khan, producing international concerts and new studio work. 

Racky Plews directs. Plews is an award-winning creative whose credits include American Idiot, Footloose, and Josephine Baker. She has also choreographed for the BBC’s The Famous Five.

Choreography is by Jade Hackett. Hackett’s credits include Miss Saigon (Sheffield Crucible), Hex (National Theatre), and Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical (West End).

From Chicago to the Stage: Chaka Khan's Journey

Born Yvette Marie Stevens, Chaka Khan is an American singer whose career spans over five decades. She rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus, delivering hits like "Tell Me Something Good" and "Ain't Nobody." Embarking on a solo career in 1978, she achieved success with songs such as "I'm Every Woman" and "I Feel for You." Known as the "Queen of Funk," Khan has sold approximately 70 million records worldwide and won ten Grammy Awards. In 2023, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognising her significant contributions to music.

With 22 albums, 25 Billboard-charted songs, and over 70 million records sold, Khan's influence on pop, soul, jazz, and funk is undeniable. I'm Every Woman marks the first time Khan's life will be explored on stage - her passion for civil rights, her struggles with addiction and against a toxic music industry, and her triumphs as a working woman.
