What Is Into the Woods About?

“I wish! More than anything”

The Baker and his Wife desperately want a child, Little Red Riding Hood wants to visit her sick grandma, Cinderella wants to attend the ball and Jack (of ‘and the Beanstalk’ fame) wants to save his beloved cow, Milky White, from being taken to market. The cast of fairytale characters venture into the deep dark woods, searching for the solution to their troubles, but when they run afoul of a Wicked Witch, their stories get entangled and new worries emerge.

Can the Witch's curse be broken? Will everyone make it “home before dark”? And what happens after happily ever after?

Full of princes, giants and big bad wolves, heartbreak, hope and magic quests, Into the Woods has become a true staple of musical theatre, and features iconic songs including “First Midnight”, “Agony”, “No One is Alone” and “Giants In the Sky”.

The History of Into the Woods

Into the Woods made its stage debut in 1986, turning the world of Grimm’s fairytales as we know it on its head. Subversive and enchanting, Into the Woods was an instant smash hit, earning ten nominations and winning three accolades at the 1988 Tony Awards. Last in the West End at the Phoenix Theatre in 1990, that production was directed by Richard Jones and produced by David Mirvish.

Into the Woods has had many award-winning revivals and adaptations over the years, including the notable Disney film starring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine, which was nominated for three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes.

This production at the Bridge marks the first major London revival of the musical in almost a decade. It received 11 nominations at the 2026 Olivier Awards and won two, including Best Musical Revival.
