Sutara Gayle is surrounded by memories. She hears her radio debut from Holloway Prison. She’s at the centre of the Brixton uprising that was triggered by the police shooting of her sister. And now, in the present, she’s at a silent retreat in India with her brother Mooji. As the legends of her life appear in front of her - her mother Euphemia, her sister Cherry, and her ancestor Nanny of the Maroons - will she be able to face the demons of her past and find a way forward?Inspired by Gayle’s remarkable life and career, The Legends of Them is a spiritual drama experience. Powered by dynamic music, unforgettable performance and sharp comedy, the story weaves through time and space, from Brixton to India and back again.
Who is Sutara Gayle AKA Lorna Gee?
Sutara Gayle, also known as Lorna Gee, is one of Britain’s pioneering female reggae artists who started out DJing in the ‘80s and scored hits with “Got To Find A Way”. In 1985 and 1986, she won the BBC Radio London Reggae Award for Best Female Artist. Gayle has also appeared on screen as an actress in Silent Witness, Run Fatboy Run and One Day.Gayle brings her own life experiences to her one-woman show, including the death of her sister Cherry Groce, who was shot by police in 1985, and her career as a reggae artist over several decades.
