Machinal Tickets

Old Vic Theatre

Rosie Sheehy stars as a woman pushed to the edge in this 5-star revival of Sophie Treadwell’s explosive drama, based on true events.

Machinal Tickets: An Astounding Classic Comes to London

In 1928, a murder shook America, and an extraordinary play was written. Don’t miss your chance to see Rosie Sheehy’s “gobsmacking” (The Standard) performance as a woman pushed to the brink in Theatre Royal Bath’s 5-star revival of Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal, directed by Olivier Award winner Richard Jones. This incredible show was showered with praise during its sold-out run at Theatre Royal Bath in 2023 and now comes to the Old Vic Theatre for just seven weeks.

About Machinal - Based On A Shocking True Story

If you asked anyone on the outside, Helen Jones and her husband’s marriage was a happy one. They seemed like the perfect couple… until she murdered him.

Based on the shocking true story of Ruth Snyder, who was tried, committed and executed for the murder of her husband in 1928, Machinal is a heartstopping drama about being pushed to the extreme by the relentless machinery of everyday life, pressures and conventions.

You may already know some of the story behind the matricide that pierced the American psyche - it inspired Bily Wilder’s Double Indemnity and Guns’n’Roses Use Your Illusion - but we guarantee that you have never experienced it like you will in this intimate, haunting production.

A Five-Star Production of a Haunting Classic

Sophie Treadwell’s provocative play boasts one of the most dynamic and emotive female roles in theatre, and in this 5-star production from Theatre Royal Bath, it has never been so compelling.

Powerhouse actress Rosie Sheehy reprises her acclaimed performance as Helen in Machinal, directed by five-time Olivier Award winner Richard Jones (Endgame; The Hairy Ape). In Bath, it was declared, “one of the great theatre nights of the decade” (WhatsOnStage) with an “astounding” (The Guardian) performance by Sheehy. Now transferring to London for a strictly limited season, this incredible production is ready to mesmerise all over again.

'm so pleased I gave 'Machinal' another chance. I first saw it at The Almeida several years ago and seem to remember not enjoying it that much. This version for me however was so much better. Incredible to think it was written in 1928, it is inspir Read more

Brilliantly acted Very intense and at points uncomfortable. The set and staging was so well considered with the claustrophobic simplicity and messaging helping add and narrate the performance.
