Beverley Knight stars in this musical play about lesser-known, but highly influential, soul duo Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight.
Marie and Rosetta in London
Rockin’ new musical play Marie and Rosetta makes its London premiere at Soho Place, just off Tottenham Court Road, starring theatre legend Beverley Knight. This “electrifying, heartfelt” (What’s on Stage) new production about little-known rock’n’roll icons Marie Knight and “Godmother of soul” Sister Rosetta Tharpe dazzled audiences in Chichester and now comes to London for a strictly limited run. So swing on down to Soho Place this New Year as Marie and Rosetta “raises the roof” (Daily Mail)!
What is the musical play Marie and Rosetta about?
It’s Mississippi, 1946, and though Sister Rosetta Tharpe is changing the face of gospel music with her innovative guitar playing style, it has come at a cost. Rosetta has been cast out by her upright community of churchgoers for her sinful glorifying of rhythm and blues music and for playing her electric guitar in nightclubs. Now out on the road, Rosetta needs a singer to accompany her on a tour of the segregated south - and Marie Knight looks to be the perfect partner. That is, if Rosetta can transform the sweet and saintly Marie’s Sunday sound into something with a bit more swing to it…
Marie and Rosetta premiered earlier in 2025 at the Rose Kingston, before transferring to the Chichester Festival Theatre to critical acclaim. This moving, toe-tapping portrait of these revolutionary rock legends features a live on-stage band performing the duo's biggest hits, including “Didn't It Rain” and “Peace in the Valley”. Dont miss this “celebration of two trailblazing Black women who broke barriers” (What’s On Stage).
