What is Marriage Material about?

Set in Wolverhampton, Marriage Material spans two generations of the Bains family, anchored by their beloved corner shop. In 1969, Mrs. Bains struggles to maintain her business while managing the demands of caring for her sick husband and raising two daughters who each yearn for very different futures.

Fast-forward to the present day, where Arjan Bains, the grandson, is pulled back to the family shop following a tragedy. Having long escaped to a new life in London, Arjan is torn between his desire to leave his past behind and his mother’s determination to keep the shop open. As Arjan journeys home to the Black Country, this sweeping family saga combines the personal and political to create a heartfelt, shrewdly funny and gripping story.

Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Iqbal Khan (East Is East), Marriage Material boasts an impressive creative team. Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, known for her hit play A Kind of People and earlier work Behzti (Dishonour) and Khandan (Family), skillfully adapts journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera’s (The Boy with the Topknot; Empireland) novel, translating its emotional depth, humour and rich character dynamics onto the stage.
