The History of Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare’s most popular and frequently performed comedies. Believed to have been written in 1598 or 1599, the play was likely first performed at the newly built Globe Theatre in London. Blending witty romantic sparring with darker themes of deception and honour, the play explores misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and clever wordplay. 

Its enduring appeal lies in its balance of sharp humour and emotional depth, particularly in the fiery love-hate dynamic between Beatrice and Benedick, with acclaimed actors such as Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones tackling the roles of the quarrelling lovers.

Much Ado About Nothing was first published in quarto form in 1600, and has remained a staple of the stage ever since, with stagings spanning from David Garrick’s 18th-century productions to notable modern interpretations, including acclaimed film adaptations, including Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 version (which also starred Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington), and Buffy creator Joss Whedon’s 2012 version.

Chelsea Walker directs. Walker is an award-winning director whose credits include the recent stage adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, All’s Well That Ends Well, and Hedda Gabler. Design is by Sami Fendall (Brigadoon, Hamlet), with music by composer, multi-instrumentalist and recording artist Angus MacRae (Mrs Warren’s Profession, Cabaret on Broadway).
