How Often Does the Les Miserables Cast Change?
The cast of Les Miserables are usually on a year-long contract, but some actors stay on for more than one season or depart early. The current West End company began performances on 7 July 2025 and are expected to appear until summer 2026.
“Star” actors sometimes come in for limited runs of 1-3 months. For example, in 2024 Bonnie Langford and Jac Yarrow starred as Madame Thénardier and Marius for four weeks. When this happens, the “star” usually replaces the “main” cast member for that period, and when they depart the “main” cast member resumes performances.
How to Find Out Who’s Performing on the Day
The main Les Mis London cast performs on most dates, but the lineup can change because of holidays, alternate or understudy schedules, and unavoidable situations (illness, injury, etc.). If a lead actor is unavailable, their role will be performed by an understudy or swing.
To check the cast list in advance:
- The official Les Mis website sometimes posts holiday and alternate schedules for specific actors, especially if the actor is a “star” casting
- Actors often post their schedule on their social media pages. Try not to message them persistently – instead, look for a Highlight or pinned post on Instagram
If you want to find out who’s in Les Miserables on the day of your trip, these are the best places to look:
- West End Understudies on X shares crowd-sourced info about understudies and covers each day
- The Sondheim Theatre usually has a cast board in the foyer that lists who is performing
- Actors might post last-minute updates to their social media accounts
Sometimes, cover announcements are very last minute so you might not find out who’s starring in Les Mis until you’re at the theatre. It might be disappointing if you miss out on seeing a particular actor, but remember: everyone on stage will make sure the performance is completely unforgettable for all the right reasons.
