About The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice

This remarkable double-bill combines two short operas to create a startling portrait of one woman pushed to the psychological brink.

The Seven Deadly Sins has music by Kurt Weill, with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht. A sharply satirical portrayal of ambition, the opera follows Anna as she is sent on an epic quest across America to find the money to fund the building of her family home. As Anna embarks on her odyssey, her personality splits in two as her morality battles against her willingness to sacrifice her beliefs for monetary gain. The opera's score draws influence from 1930s American Jazz and the Weimar Cabaret.

The Human Voice has music by Francis Poulenc and a libretto by Jean Cocteau. This one-woman opera unfolds over the course of a single phone call - the last communication of a doomed love affair. Devastating, tender and with an innovative score that echoes human speech patterns, The Human Voice asks how you say goodbye to someone who is no longer there?

The History of The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice

The Seven Deadly Sins is the final collaboration between Weill and Brecht, best known for their work together on The Threepenny Opera, and was written in 1932, after both had fled Nazi Germany, as a commission by Englishman Edward James. The production was originally staged as a ‘sung ballet’ with a dancer and singer performing as the two sides of Anna.

The Human Voice was created by Francis Poulenc in 1958, based on Cocteau’s 1930 play of the same name. Cocteau, along with French soprano Denise Duval, collaborated with Poulenc on adapting the script, which premiered in 1959 at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, with Duval in the lead role of Elle.
