California, 1976: an unnamed, up-and-coming Anglo-American rock band sit down to record their latest album over the course of a year. On the cusp of superstardom, the pressure is on, but with the band consisting of two couples - bassist Reg and keyboardist Holly, who are married, and long-term partners guitarist Peter and vocalist Diana - they struggle to maintain the balance between the professional and the personal. As cracks begin to appear in their relationships, tensions mount, and drummer Steve - along with studio assistants Grover and Charlie - tries to keep the peace and stay on track. Fueled by cocaine binges, late-night sessions, and an obscene number of takes, the band become ever more fractured as they fight to achieve perfection, and the studio becomes a powder keg, ready to explode. Will the band break down, or break through?Written over ten years by award-winning playwright David Adjmi, and with “smart, well-crafted tunes” (Vulture) from Arcade Fire’s Will Butler Stereophonic looks at love, art, the myth of “male genius”, industry greed, and what happens when you get what you think you want. Stereophonic’s Broadway run broke records, as it became the most-nominated play of all time at the 2024 Tony Awards, receiving thirteen nominations and winning five, including Best Play. Stereophonic “already feels like a must-see American classic” (New York Times) - so get ready to be dazzled, London, and book now as this show is sure to be a sell-out.
Who are the cast and creatives of Stereophonic?
Full casting for the West End transfer of Stereophonic is still to be announced, but three of the “brilliant ensemble” (The Guardian) of actors from the Broadway run are confirmed to be reprising their roles: Chris Stack (Interview with the Vampire) as Simon, Andrew R. Butler (The Skin of Our Teeth) as Charlie and Eli Gelb (Skintight) as Grover. The original Broadway cast also included Will Brill (The Scottish Play) as Reg, Tom Pecinka (Troilus and Cressida) as Peter, Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things) as Diana, Juliana Canfield (Y: The Last Man) as Holly.
Stereophonic is by Tony and Drama Desk award-winning playwright David Adjimi (Stunning, Marie Antoinette, Evil Doer) and marked Adjimi’s Broadway debut. Music is by Grammy-winning and Academy Award-nominated composer and multi-instrumentalist Will Butler, previously of indie-rock band Arcade Fire. The Broadway production was directed “with a conductor’s precision” (New York Times) by Tony Award-winning director, and previous artistic director of the SoHo Rep Theatre, Daniel Aukin (Admissions, Fool for Love) who also directs the West End transfer.
