Midsummer Madness: Tickets for Twelfth Night
Prepare to be swept away to the island of Illyria, with Twelfth Night, or What You Will as Shakespeare’s beloved tragi-comic play about love, loss and hidden identity returns to the Globe Theatre this summer. At turns a hilarious farce, a moving meditation on grief, a romance and a dark comedy, Twelfth Night is the perfect show to catch under the open sky this summer - just hope for clear skies! What is the play Twelfth Night about?
“If music be the food of love, play on.”When a storm leaves noblewoman Viola shipwrecked on the island of Illyria, she finds herself washed up firmly into the centre of a love triangle. Disguised as a boy and calling herself Cesario, Viola takes up a place as a page in the household of the lovesick Duke Orsino, and promptly develops feelings for him. But the Duke is longing for the countess Olivia - who is in mourning and wants nothing to do with him - and Viola cannot reveal her true identity. Then, when the Duke sends Viola to woo Olivia on his behalf, she promptly falls in love with ‘Cesario’, and makes her move on the bewildered Viola.
The nobility aren’t the only ones with love issues. Olivia’s stuffy servant Malvolio secretly harbours feelings for his mistress - a fact that the countess's drunken uncle Sir Toby Belch and his friends take advantage of to cause some mayhem.
Plus, there’s the small matter of Viola’s twin brother Sebastian, believed to be lost at sea, whose appearance on the island adds further tangles to this knotted web of hearts...
Filled with mistaken identity, musical interludes and hilarious physical comedy, Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays. Believed to have been written in 1601-1602, Twelfth Night, or What You Will has been revived and adapted countless times over the centuries, as operas, musicals, TV shows and films, including as 2006 teen film She’s The Man.
