In the height of summer the cicadas are singing and the Lafayette family have converged on their late patriarch’s home in Arkansas. They need to deal with his estate, but they all have different ideas about how it will happen.

Toni wants to spend the weekend reminiscing about their father and reconnecting over childhood memories. Her brother Bo wants to regain some of the money he spent looking after their dad. Both find their visions interrupted by the arrival of estranged brother Franz, who turns up late at night, and discovers mysterious objects amongst all of the clutter littered across the house. Long-held secrets and hidden resentments come to the surface, and the siblings are forced to confront the ghosts lurking in their past.

Appropriate is written by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Jacobs-Jenkins won the 2014 Obie Award for Best New American Play for both Appropriate and An Octoroon, and his other works include Gloria and Everybody. With a sharp eye for the intersection of race, class and individual ambition, his plays are some of the most gripping, entertaining and thought-provoking works by a modern American playwright, and he now makes his long-awaited Broadway debut with a revival of this darkly comic family drama.

Lila Neugebauer directs, following her Tony Award-nominated revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery on Broadway back in 2018.

Sarah Paulson in Appropriate

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Sarah Paulson stars in Appropriate as Toni. Paulson is a celebrated actress of both stage and screen, with major roles in shows including American Horror Story, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Twelve Years a Slave and The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

On stage, she has appeared in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway and Talley’s Folly at the Laura Pels Theatre Off-Broadway.
