About the BAM Harvey Theater

Part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music Strong, the Harvey Theater is located in scenic downtown Brooklyn, and is known for its avant-garde productions. The venue first opened in 1904, designed by architects Herts & Tallant in a Renaissance style. Then named the Majestic Theater, it housed many vaudeville, light opera and theatre shows, with productions often opening here before heading to Broadway. In 1942, the venue became a European-style movie theatre run by a Parisian family who had relocated to Brooklyn to flee the Nazis.

The cinema closed in the 1960s, and the building was abandoned for almost two decades until BAM president and Executive Producer Harvey Lichtenstein took ownership of the venue. The theatre underwent extensive refurbishments, completed in 1987, which retained many original features. The renovations won the 1998 Architectural Theater Award. In 1999, the theater was renamed the Harvey Theater in honor of Lichtenstein’s retirement. Notable productions include A Streetcar Named Desire, with productions in 2009 starring Cate Blanchett and in 2024 starring Paul Mescal; The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window starring Oscar Isaac; and Jamie Lloyd’s Cyrano with James McAvoy.
