What Is the Shakespeare Play Hamlet About?

Following Hamlet’s father unexpected death, his mother swiftly remarries his uncle and the prince is returns home from university to mourn. But all is not well in Denmark, and Hamlet begins to suspect his power-hungry uncle may be behind his father’s death. As his grief haunts him, both literally and figuratively, Hamlet prepares to enact his revenge. But, the prince’s mind begins to seemingly unravel, and events soon take an inevitably tragic turn…

The History of Hamlet

Widely considered one of the greatest plays of all time, Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most-performed and best-known tragedies. Written some time between 1599 and 1601, Hamlet has been revived and adapted countless times, with standout productions including the Oscar-winning movie adaptation from 1948, which starred Laurence Olivier, and remains the only Shakespeare adaptation at present to have won an Academy Award.


This bold and fearless revival kicks off a new, ongoing partnership between London's National Theatre and BAM, with a sharply witty, stylish take on a classic that is unafraid to ask the big questions - you know the ones....

The Cast of Hamlet

Sri Lankan actor Hiran Abeysekera stars as Hamlet, reviving his role from the production's London run. Abeysekera is best known for his breakout role as Pi Patel in the highly acclaimed stage adaptation of The Life of Pi, which he performed in London and onBroadway, earning both an Olivier win and Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. Other credits include Botticelli in the Fire, Tartuffe and Doctor Who Showrunner Russell T Davies' television adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The Creative Team of Hamlet

Robert Hastie directs. Hastie is an Olivier Award-winning British director. Credits include Much Ado About Nothing, Standing at the Sky's Edge for the National Theatre and West End, Macbeth for Shakespeare’s Globe, and Operation Mincemeat in the West End.
