What’s On at Barrymore Theatre
The Barrymore Theatre is renowned for hosting incredible performances from some of the biggest names in film, television and theater. Coming up soon, it is welcoming a huge revival of Shakespeare’s Othello on Broadway, starring Hollywood royalty Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. NYC is no stranger to celebrities treading the boards but this double-act is something really special. Washington plays tortured general Othello opposite Gyllenhaal as manipulative Iago, and we expect sparks to fly… and probably award nominations as well! Other shows opening at the Barrymore are to be announced, but expect to see even more big names in lights above the door in 2025.
About the Barrymore Theatre
In 1928, famed actress Ethel Barrymore had a theater not just named after her, but built for her. Opening that December with The Kingdom of God, the Barrymore Theatre is the sole remaining venue named for Broadway moguls the Shubert brothers’ affiliated performers.
The Barrymore Theatre has housed revivals, small dramas and star-studded performances thanks to its intimate but grand design. Frequent Shubert collaborator Herbert J. Krapp drew on a medley of influences from Roman terracotta above the entrance, to a lavish and warm fusion of Edwardian, neo-classical and Mediterranean décor inside.
Ethel Barrymore trod the boards of her namesake for around a decade in various plays and revivals, and the theater has enjoyed a distinguished history since. Past productions include Noel Coward’s Design for Living (1933), Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun (1959), and more recently the Broadway transfers of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2014) and The Inheritance (2019).

The Barrymore Theatre is located at 243 West 47th Street, just around the corner from Times Square and a short walk from Broadway itself. It sits on a busy theater block with the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre next door. There are also plenty of tourist hotspots and restaurants nearby to add to your itinerary. The Barrymore Theatre’s central location means it is easily accessible by a variety of transport options in New York, including buses and the subway system. Those who prefer to drive will also find garages nearby.
