The History of CATS: The Jellicle Ball

Cats the Musical is written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on T.S. Eliot's 1939 book of poems Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The musical premiered in 1981 to critical acclaim and has won numerous awards, including the Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Musical.

CATS: The Jellicle Ball is the first adaptation of the musical to radically reimagine the show, taking inspiration from ballroom culture and incorporating ball categories and voguing and starring a mixture of seasoned Broadway performers and members of ballroom houses.

The production premiered off-Broadway in 2024 at the Perelman Performing Arts Center and was a smash hit, extending three times and snatching multiple trophies, including two Outer Critics Circle Awards, three OBIE Awards, a New York Drama Critics Circle Special Citation, a Chita Rivera Award, three Hewes Design Awards, two Audelco Awards, and three Dorian Theater Awards for LGBTQ excellence.

What is ballroom culture? 

Many people will be familiar with ballroom from the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, which documented the ballroom scene in the late 80s in New York, or Ryan Murphy's Smash hit FX show Pose, but for the uninitiated, ball culture is an underground LGBTQ+ subculture that emerged in cities including New York, Washington D.C., Chicago and beyond, primarily among African‑American and Latino queer and trans communities. At its core are events called balls, where participants - often organised into chosen families known as “houses”, traditionally named after luxury brands or designer labels - compete in performance categories: walking in runway‑style, voguing, modelling, costuming and lip‑syncing while aiming for trophies, recognition and community.
